March Madness: Round 2 Contenders

After a few stunning upsets last week, I'm looking forward to seeing who makes it into the quarterfinals! Here are the match and the judging criteria for each. (This post will be updated with winners and ties will be broken by Chris Svec.)

Each win is worth 2 points in this round.

  • Raspberry Pi 3 vs. Intel Edison: Number of ADCs
    • TIE: Neither board has any ADCs!
    • Referee: The Pi wins it because of its huge fanbase and popularity
  • PINE 64 vs .BeagleBone Black: Size of RAM
    • A whopping 256M for BBB, but only 512k for the processing powerhorse PINE.
  • PyBoard vs. Arduino Due: Number of UART / SPI / I2C
    • Pyboard: 5+2+2 = 9; Due: 4+1+2 = 7; Pyboard wins!
  • NUCLEO-F401RE vs. PSoC 4 BLE: Dev kit size (total board area)
    • PSoc 4 BLE is 45 x 27 x 2 mm, NUCLEO is a little smaller than an Arduino (So 2.1x2.7" = around 53 x 70mm)
  • Particle Photon vs. ESP8266: Ability to connect to internet
    • TIE: Both were born to internet.
    • Referee: This was a tough matchup, but the ESP8266 dug deeper to win it in overtime.
  • Blue Bean vs. Adafruit Feather Huzzah: Supported by platformio compiler
    • While both are supported, Huzzah support was easier to google for.
  • Propeller P8X32A vs. Adafruit Trinket: Number of hits in google for the dev kit
    • Propeller P8X32A had 16,800 results with the Adafruit Trinket had 170,000 results. This popularity contest goes to the Trinket by an order of magnitude. (Note, despite the mispelling of Propeller on the bracket sheets, I used the correct spelling for this test.)
  • Lilypad Atmega 32V4 vs. AT89STK-11: Number of bits (32, 64, 16, 8)
    • TIE: These are both 8-bit controllers.
    • Referee: The 8051 wins it due to its experience.
